Near To The Brokenhearted
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted And saves those who are crushed in spirits. Psalm 34:18
If you have ever loved and lost you can understand why Mary Magdalene was standing outside the tomb of Jesus weeping. Grieving the loss of her friend, you can only imagine that her heart felt just as dark and hollow as the empty tomb she peered into. But after all departed, she looked one last time in the tomb and behold she was not alone. Two angels from heaven, dressed in white, were sitting at the head and feet of where Jesus had been lying. The messengers in her time of mourning asked her why she was weeping and took care to listen to her response. When she finished explaining, Jesus, unrecognizable to her, appeared but as the gardener. Jesus, knowing why she was weeping, still inquired to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Mary, not recognizing her Lord, responded to the gardener similarly as she did to the messengers. It was only when He called her by name did she recognize Jesus, her Lord and Teacher whom she loved.
The Word of God promises in Psalm 34:18 that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those crushed in spirit. Jesus, a man of His Word, was very near to Mary on her day of mourning and it was His presence that revived her spirits. So today, if your heart is broken and your spirits crushed you can trust and rest assured that the Lord is close to you too. And like Mary, you may not see the Lord as you know Him, but instead He may come to you in a way, shape or form that is unrecognizable to you but well suited for your surroundings. He may even send His messengers from afar to send great tidings of joy or words and songs of comfort. The Lord works in mysterious ways and there is no telling how far He will go to be close to you in your time of need. So rest assured and be encouraged that if your heart is hurting you are not alone and Jesus is just as close to you today as He was to Mary.
