Happy Families: Banana Smoothie On Demand
Recently, a milkshake habit developed in my house. What began as an occasional sweet treat soon grew into an every evening request. For a few weeks, every night the kids were requesting either a vanilla or banana milkshake for a snack. After a while of milkshake making, it occurred to me that this is probably not the best habit to teach my children. While I love an occasional treat, I know I cannot eat them every night without consequences. Heaven forbid the bathroom scale ever lie or my pants stretch endlessly. I know eating ice cream and drinking milkshakes every night is not good for me so why would I ever think it would be good for my children? Ice cream is packed with calories, sugar and fat and milkshakes add more depending on what flavors you choose. I love my children and desire for them to be healthy and strong not sick whether in young age or old. And as their parent, I have a responsibility to teach them good habits while they are under my care so they will carry those lessons into adulthood as it is promised in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he grows older he will not abandon it.” So knowing all this, I had to kick this milkshake habit to the curb.
Since I am the one who shops, it was up to me to break this unhealthy milkshake habit once and for all so I did not buy the ice cream on the next shopping trip. However, despite doing my part to stop milkshake production, it did not stop my children from requesting them or a night time snack. So since I also delight in happy children, I thought a smoothie might be a good alternative. And as it turns out, it is! The banana smoothies pictured above has become a regular favorite in our house! And the good news is that you probably already have all the ingredients you need to create this delicious treat for you and your family! Healthy and happy parents and children is a win win!
