Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea. John 21:7
There are so many things I love about this story but my favorite is Peter throwing himself into the sea! I love the urgency of Peter’s response to the Lord. He did not care about getting wet or how far he had to swim. He did not care what the other disciples thought or about the net full of fish. He did not wait for the net to be secured or for the boat to row to shore. All Peter wanted was Jesus!
Friends, shouldn’t our response to Jesus look more like Peter’s spontaneous leap into the sea? Shouldn’t we respond to Jesus with urgency? Shouldn’t we forget the work and urgently pursue Jesus? And shouldn’t we be willing to pursue Jesus no matter what? No matter the cost, no matter what it looks like, and no matter what others think? Shouldn’t we care more about being close to Jesus than anything else?
Listen, no matter what boat you’re in with who and no matter what you are doing, Jesus is close and He is waiting for you to throw yourself all in to be close to Him. He will do for you what He did for Peter and the other disciples, the fire will already be laid and the provisions will be there with it. Jesus goes before you and already has everything you need so why not jump on in!
